Fat-dissolving injections: easy peasy LEMON squeezy? No. It’s more like stressed, depressed lemon zest if they’re a BOTTLE of unregulated ingredients that can cause you serious harm.

  • Fat-dissolving injections have been all the rage recently on social media. The problem is that these treatments are sometimes provided by unethical, unlicensed, and untrained individuals. This can have dire consequences for patients – from infections to permanent muscle damage and even death.
  • In our latest AAMSSA Bulletin Dr Debbie Norval reports on the dangers of having dubious products injected into your skin by “practitioners” who are not legally allowed to offer such treatments. When it comes to fat-dissolving (lipolytic) injections, in South Africa, only medical doctors are allowed to administer these. This is for two main reasons: anatomical knowledge is necessary to prevent a range of possible complications and doctors are only allowed to use registered and regulated products on their patients – ensuring maximum possible safety.
