TOO HIGH A PRICE FOR A “BARGAIN”?

🌏 Medical tourism gone wrong – and the tragic cost of unregulated surgery abroad.

✈️A heartbreaking case in the UK has reignited international concern around medical tourism after 42-year-old Danielle Peebles was left paralysed following weight-loss surgery in Turkey. Diagnosed with acute nutritional neuropathy, she now faces life in a wheelchair , all in the hope of improving her health to meet her newborn grandson.

❗️This is not an isolated case. It is reported that in the past five years, 28 British people have died in Turkey after travelling there for elective medical procedures.

⚠️ The British Association of Cosmetic Surgeons (BACS) has issued a warning about the growing dangers of seeking “budget” procedures overseas.
While these surgeries are marketed as affordable, many are performed in settings without proper regulation, follow-up care, or qualified professionals.

⚠️Dr Ian Morgan, President of BACS, put it plainly:
“Patients are being sold a dream but waking up to a nightmare.”

🇿🇦At AAMSSA, we echo these concerns. We urge all South Africans to prioritise safety over savings.
Major surgeries like bariatric procedures are not cosmetic shortcuts . They carry serious risks and demand ongoing monitoring with long-term, supervised medical and nutritional care.

❗️Language barriers, inconsistent standards, and lack of continuity in care can turn what seems like a quick fix into a lifelong complication.
