CAN PATIENTS WITH AUTOIMMUNE CONDITIONS HAVE AESTHETIC TREATMENTS ?

✅Although there is no solid scientific evidence that prohibits using dermal fillers, threads or biostimulators in patients with autoimmune diseases, there are concerns about the risk of increased or abnormal inflammation or immune responses, like swelling or granulomas.

✅These concerns come from clinical observations rather than large scientific studies. In clinical practice when a doctor sees a reaction, swelling, nodule or lump as an adverse reaction to a filler, on carefully probing one often finds an underlying “autoimmune” history.

✅While dermal filler companies mention limited safety data for patients on immunosuppressants, they don’t say fillers can’t be used for autoimmune conditions. Some reports suggest a higher risk of nodules or delayed reactions, but many patients with well-controlled autoimmune diseases have safely undergone treatments.

✅Before doing any filler or biostimulator treatments, aesthetic doctors should check how stable the autoimmune condition is and consult with the patient’s physician or rheumatologist.

✅Patients should be informed about the risk of chronic swelling and nodules, especially around the eye area, which is more prone to long-term swelling. In such cases, referring the patient to a plastic surgeon for lipofilling may be a safer option to avoid immune reactions.
